Santos Anne… The Ghosts of Brunches Past

18 04 2012

Location: 366 Union Ave @ Grand St, Williamsburg

Menu: not online yet, but here’s their website http://santosanne.com/

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12p – 4p

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: An adorable fusion of French and Mexican.  I was super sad when Elote closed, but this place soothes the loss.  The fare is mostly spicy, but not un-doable (even for a wuss like me).  Overall, this place is awesome – friendly staff, great food – and I highly recommend you try it, especially in the warm weather as their backyard is outstanding.  And they give you a free tequila shot at the end of the meal.  Nice.

Long Story Long:

Do not be fooled by the picture above.  That is NOT a bloody Mary.  That is her mexican cousin, a bloody Maria, containing housemade, rosemary infused tequila.  I’m not gonna lie – it was scary.  I could tell it would be spicy (that thick, seed-filled jalapeño slice is what tipped me off) and I could tell it would be strong (the whiff of tequila as the glass was placed on the table was my clue there); I was disappointed on neither count.  It was overall pretty delish except that as a direct result of a VERY drunken going away party the night before, I was almost unable to finish it.  Almost.

Indulge me as I backtrack a little here – Read the rest of this entry »

Fanny… Le Sigh

27 02 2010

Location: 425 Graham Ave, between Frost & Withers, Williamsburg

Menu: http://fannyfood.com/Menus.pdf

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am-4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: $13 brunch special includes a fresh-squeezed orange juice & mimosa or bloody – since they are a wine & beer only establishment, they claim to use something called “white wine vodka” in the bloody – weird.

Long Story Long:

I was really really excited to check this place out as I have had some truly amazing dinners here that, to be honest, set me back a bit.  So I was delighted to see that they had a deal for brunch which included a bloody.  Word.  We had a big group this day, so we called ahead and easily got a reservation.  I was joined by BFFF and The Filmmaker, as well as Mr. Awesome Table Manners who I had not brunched with in ages.  I was told we would also be joined by Dumpling, a west-side-of-the-city dweller who I don’t believe I have ever seen in Williamsburg in the light of day.  I was so convinced he wouldn’t make it that I almost told the waitress to clear his place setting, but lo and behold, he actually made it – another delightful surprise.

… and things only went downhill from there.  Le sigh. Read the rest of this entry »

Fada… French for LIES

24 10 2009

Eggs FADA & Potatoes - Fada

Location: 530 Driggs Ave @ N. 8th St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.fadany.com/pages/brunch.html

Brunch Hours: Friday, 10am – 4pm, Sat & Sun, 10am – 5pm, cash & amex only

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: Ok first of all, their online menu is filled with un-truths.  There is no brunch prix fixe, trust me – I was literally just there.  That being said, it was pretty cheap. $7 bloodys though.  Food was kind of meh.

Long Story Long:

I have been sort of putting off going here because my BFFF, and frequent brunch companion, refuses to go here after a disappointing dinner experience.  Since she was otherwise occupied this morning, I thought I should take the opportunity to check it out.  I was really excited for the AMAZING-looking selection of croques on their online menu… yeah.  Tell that to their actual menu.  No croques, no prix fixe.  What. The. FUCK.

Juliette… Tre Classy

13 06 2009

Location: 135 N. 5th St @ Bedford, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.juliettewilliamsburg.com/brunch-menu

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 10:30am – 5pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Classy bistro in a beautiful space, great roof deck too.  The food is good, elegant, if not a bit pricey.  Fancy, but laid back all at the same time.

Long Story Long:

It’s weird, but this place makes me feel fancy.  It’s such a bright, lovely space – I really love it and for some reason, just walking in elevates me somehow….  It’s hard to explain, but it just seems elegant, and that atmosphere, at least for me, usually leads to decadence, so be fore-warned – it’s not exactly cheap, and you too may be glamoured (for lack of a better word) into over-ordering.   Read the rest of this entry »

Le Barricou… Le Mise en Scène

1 02 2009

Location: 533 Grand St between Lorimer St & Union Ave, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.lebarricouny.com/

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Tasty, ample entrees under $10. Great bloodys for $7, mimosas for $5, interesting signature cocktails.

Long Story Long:

For some reason, what always strikes me about Barricou is that it feels like it needs a backyard.  Instead, it has a lovely back room with couches and a gorgeous fireplace.  Great for the winter, not so much in the spring/summer with only a couple tables in the front window overlooking… Grand St.  But still, the food is really, really good and reasonably priced.  Fries are decent (though I remember then being better a couple months ago. Not sure what happened there), and the bloodys are fantastic.   Read the rest of this entry »
