Aurora… XXXXL

16 04 2010

Location: 70 Grand St @ Wythe, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.auroraristorante.com/menus.html#

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4pm, cash only

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Nice menu, interesting cocktail menu ($7 for a regular bloody, $12 for XL), pretty garden out back.  There is a prix fixe for $15 which includes a bloody, mimosa or bellini and coffee (XL bloody not included).  Service was slow, especially at the bar – get it together, Aurora.

Long Story Long:

So, it had been several weeks since I had had brunch with BFFF for one reason or another (aka she started to run qualifying races for the NY Marathon on the weekends.  I am very proud of her for this, but at the same time it’s really starting to fuck with my weekend plans).  We were really excited to try this place as we had stumbled upon it on a walk one blustery winter afternoon, saw the amazing garden, and made a mental note to hold off on coming back until the weather was better.

We waited and waited for the right weekend, taunted by visions of just exactly how “XL” an “XL” bloody mary could be.  Finally, last Saturday, we were both free, the sun was shining and it was warm enough to eat outdoors – it was happening. Read the rest of this entry »

Acqua Santa… Caveat Emptor

20 02 2010

Location: 556 Driggs Ave @ N. 7th St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.acquasanta.com/menus.html

Brunch Hours: Sat, 11am – Midnight, & Sun, 11am – 11pm

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: $20 prix fixe gets you a mimosa, entree, coffee & dessert.  Since I hate mimosas and rarely get dessert, this isn’t exactly what I would call a great deal.  Feel free to disagree if that’s your thing and I suppose I could have also ordered a la carte… but honestly the food was pretty mediocre.

Long Story Long:

Oh how you woo-ed me with your $20 prix fixe and your beautiful garden…

I should have known something was amiss when BFFF & I were greeted by a sparsely decorated main room, a giant creepy picture of an altar boy looming in the background.   Read the rest of this entry »

Baci & Abbracci… Tricks and Treats

31 10 2009

Bloody Mary & Strawberry Mojito - Baci & Abracci

Location: 204 Grand St @ Bedford Ave, Williamsburg

Menu: http://baciny.com/frame_brunch.php

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Majority of entrees under $10, lots of fun sounding omelettes and frittatas, also, this sounds ridiculous: Focaccia con nutella – Two layers of pizza bread with nutella. Yum!  All that and $5 bloodys.

Long Story Long:

Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday though I haven’t actually worn a costume in many, many years.  In my mind, there is much too much pressure to be clever – but I admire those who take the time and effort to go through all that.  Of course, I always get shit about this; i.e., “How can you love Halloween but not dress up, blah blah blah” -  so this year I let myself be persuaded to consider participating in a group costume of some sort if we could have brunch first to discuss.  I met my BFFF and our long-lost brunch buddy, The Filmmaker.  Oddly enough, he was the one pushing for the costume when, generally, I can count on him to be as much of a non-joiner as I am.  This will not do, I thought, and started scheming.  Step one, I chose a place with Italian food – Baci & Abbracci.  We got there around 2pm and there was literally no one else there – awesome to have the place to ourselves, but I generally shy away from empty restaurants.  It just seems like a bad sign.  My BFFF however, was starving (as usual) and flat-out refused to go elsewhere when food was so nearby.  Plus, she reasoned, we probably wouldn’t have to wait that long for service.  Good point…. Fiore… More Cheese with Your Whine?

fiore

Location: 284 Grand St, between Roebling & Havemeyer, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.fiorebk.com/menus.htm

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4pm, cash only

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: $7 bloodys, mimosas, or bellinis, HUGE really delicious plates, great service even for pains in the ass such as we were that day

Long Story Long:

This was not a good morning.  For some reason my friends and I thought it would be a really great idea to stay out until 5:30am.  I have no problem admitting that I just might be too old to still be doing that at this point.  In any case, even walking to brunch was a chore – I was attacked by pigeons, assaulted by a random street fair which turned out to be, of all things, a fucking health fair wherein a young child walked up to me to ask if I wanted to know how healthy I was.  No thanks, Junior… Read the rest of this entry »

Miranda… Bloody Sneaky

8 08 2009

miranda

Location: 80 Berry St @ N. 9th St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.mirandarestaurant.com/miranda-brunch.htm

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 3pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Very classy, delicious & different food.  Most egg entrees under $10. Wine & beer only, but the Michelada I had was a delightfully deceptive stand-in for my usual bloody.

Long Story Long:

All I wanted this particular morning was a bloody and a burger.  A friend of mine suggested this place which offers neither.  I eventually caved when I was accused of being narrow-minded.  Well, sure I am, but no bloodys? Humph.  So we walk in and I see a drink on someone’s table (a la pic #2 below) which looks suspiciously familiar…. My heart skipped a beat.  Is it possible that my non-conformity was being rewarded?  I feverishly checked the menu and saw on the drink menu three words that were just… well, cruel.  “VIRGIN Bloody Mary.”  Um, no.  Never.  Nothanx. Fornino… ***NO LONGER SERVES BRUNCH

16 05 2009

fornino

Location: 187 Bedford Ave @ N. 7th St, Williamsburg

Menu: brunch menu is not online

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm- 4pm

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: The brunch pizzas are HUGE and tasty. You should be into sunny-side up eggs, though. Mimosa is included, and beer & wine is also available if that’s your thing.

Long Story Long:

Being a bloodys-and-omelette type of gal, it took a little convincing to get me here. It’s not that the menu didn’t sound delicious- very interesting flavor combos- but I guess, unless I’m feeling a burger, I generally tend towards breakfasty foods for brunch. That being said, these brunch pizzas are pretty breakfasty – eggs & prosciutto, eggs & spinach, eggs and sausage topped with truffle oil…. yum. Also, as the photos can attest, they are HUGE.

My Rating:level1(because it’s closed)

Long Story Short: Your reasonably priced meal comes with a Mimosa or Bellini and coffee.  Brunch entrees all under $10. word.

Long Story Long:

My previous experiences with n.6 have always been romantic dinners… with my BFFF.  She likes candles on the table, what can i say?  So when she thought that we should check out the brunch, I was totally down.   Read the rest of this entry »
