Santos Anne… The Ghosts of Brunches Past

18 04 2012

Location: 366 Union Ave @ Grand St, Williamsburg

Menu: not online yet, but here’s their website http://santosanne.com/

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12p – 4p

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: An adorable fusion of French and Mexican.  I was super sad when Elote closed, but this place soothes the loss.  The fare is mostly spicy, but not un-doable (even for a wuss like me).  Overall, this place is awesome – friendly staff, great food – and I highly recommend you try it, especially in the warm weather as their backyard is outstanding.  And they give you a free tequila shot at the end of the meal.  Nice.

Long Story Long:

Do not be fooled by the picture above.  That is NOT a bloody Mary.  That is her mexican cousin, a bloody Maria, containing housemade, rosemary infused tequila.  I’m not gonna lie – it was scary.  I could tell it would be spicy (that thick, seed-filled jalapeño slice is what tipped me off) and I could tell it would be strong (the whiff of tequila as the glass was placed on the table was my clue there); I was disappointed on neither count.  It was overall pretty delish except that as a direct result of a VERY drunken going away party the night before, I was almost unable to finish it.  Almost.

Indulge me as I backtrack a little here – Read the rest of this entry »

Daddy-O… Working Grrlz

21 02 2010

Location: 44 Bedford St, New York, NY

Menu: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/daddy-o/menu

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: Yeah, yeah, yeah – it’s not in Williamsburg, but it doesn’t matter.  Food was only ok, and very, very pricey.  In spite of the fact that I had a lovely time here due to the company I was with (and the waitress was super nice too), it was definitely not good bang for the buck.  Stay local, people.

Long Story Long:

There are very few things that will get my ass onto the L train and across the East River to the mainland on a Sunday morning- er, early afternoon, that is – after a pretty crazy night out.  In this case, it was work-related (brunch followed by a meeting in Soho west), so I dragged myself to the subway, and into the far reaches of the west village to meet some friends slash coworkers – namely, Booknerd, Tiny Dancer, UBL & of course, the infamous Girlfriend Jones. Mesa Coyoacan… WTFS?

7 02 2010

Chips and Guacamole - Mesa Coyoacan

Location: 372 Graham Ave, between Conselyea & Skillman, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.mesacoyoacan.com/

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Reasonably priced, and the food here is awesome.   They have tequila, wine & beer based cocktails.

Long Story Long:

Here’s the deal – I was a huge mess at this brunch.  I had… well, I had a night, details of which I will keep to myself.  Oh, stop it – sadly, it’s not what you’re thinking.  Suffice it to say there was some dramz and for the first time I was directly involved instead of just a spectator.  All is well and good now, but at the time I thought the quickest fix was several rounds from the bar to “recover” and I was definitely paying for it the next day.   I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chux & Buck Shot, my fellow diners, for their kindness, their understanding and most of all their ability to let me ramble on and on and on about nonsense without (I hope) judging me.

In any case, I had been super-psyched to have brunch here because the food is fantastic.  Another perk is that Buck Shot and his BF, Ruby, are regulars and the staff apparently loves them.  Therefore, they always get free shit.  They have this running debate as to which one of them is the cause of this adoration, or if it’s them as a couple.  So in an interesting twist, Ruby couldn’t join us because he had to work – we were about to solve this once and for all… Read the rest of this entry »

Harefield Road… Good on Paper

28 11 2009

Bloody Mary & Mimosa - Harefield Road

Location: 769 Metropolitan Ave, between Graham & Humboldt, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/harefield-road-pub/menu

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: $12 for a vast selection of entrees, plus coffee or tea & bloody or mimosa.  Though I am a huge fan of this bar, I wasn’t really blown away by the brunch.  I hear the huevos rancheros are a good choice, plus it is a really good deal.

Long Story Long:

I have been adamantly avoiding brunch at this place.  Not for nothing, but this is my very own neighborhood bar.  It is a block and a half away from my apartment, I know a significant number of the bartenders by name as well as a few of the other regulars, it’s the first and only bar I have ever been to alone, and it is one of very few places I have let myself act like a complete ass.  That’s all well and good at the end of a crazy Friday or Saturday night, but in the sober light of day… needless to say, I was a bit hesitant to show my face there.  It was, however, a ridiculously broke Saturday morning coupled with a seemingly insatiable bloody mary craving that finally drove me to it.  Also, I was reassured by BFFF who has spent some time in the bar-staurant industry: she convinced me that there was very little chance that anyone who works until last call would be back for a brunch shift.  As long as we made it in and out before happy hour, we were good to go…. even though their happy hour does offer $3 wells… but I digress. El Almacen… Over-Medium

14 11 2009

Steak & Eggs - El Almacen

Location: 557 Driggs Ave @ N. 7th St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/el-almacen/menu

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 3pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Entrees under $12.  Drinks are good, but only wine & beer based or mimosas – and cost around $8ish, $9ish

Long Story Long:

It was yet another very rough Friday night that preceded this trip to El Almacen, and the fucking terrible weather was not helping at all.  As I stumbled my way through the streets with the world’s cheapest, most asinine $5 umbrella, strongly reconsidering my choice to leave the house, I get a text from BFFF (who, incidentally does not believe in umbrellas, and I was beginning to understand why) that she was already at the restaurant and sitting outside in the back garden.  Interesting…. but as I am never one to turn down one last brunch outdoors before winter, I decided not to ask questions and just trust her.  Plus, I learned my lesson from the Fada incident…. Elote… Ah, Elote… **CLOSED

7 02 2009

My Favorite Bloody Mary in Williamsburg - Elote

Menu: http://www.eloterestaurant.com (just the regular menu)

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11:30a – 3:30p

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: $12 includes coffee and a cocktail, probably my favorite bloody mary in the neighborhood.  Make sure you have a taste for mexican food.

Long Story Long:

Elote… how i dream about your bloody mary….

Sooo… not to overstate, but in my very humble opinion, this is the very best bloody mary in all of Williamsburg.  Perhaps in all of New York… again, not to overstate.  It’s big.  It’s spicy.  Wonderful.  Disagree if you want, but i stand by it as my favorite for sure (and the sangria ain’t too shabby either).

The food here is good too, provided you are feeling mexican food.  They have chilaquiles – according to my mexican friend the one and only hangover cure Read the rest of this entry »

Taco Chulo… Hmmmmm

Menu: http://tacochulo.com/menu-brunch.html

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 5pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: 2-for-1 mimosas, huge & delicious food if you are in the mood for mexican, served til 5.

Long Story Long:

Ok, so because I only took pics of our cocktails the one time I ate here with my lovely brunch partner in crime (I think we were starving), I completely forgot to write about it and therefore completely forgot what I ate.  I’d like to blame this on alcohol, but it has really just been too long, so until I go there again, here’s what I got.  I remember that chips and salsa were a welcome greeting as was the massive bloody mary I received.  Looking at the menu to refresh my memory, I vaguely recall ordering the Migas Read the rest of this entry »
