Il Passatore… Fuzzy Memories

1 05 2010

Location: 14 Bushwick Ave @ Green, Greenpoint

Menu: http://www.ilpassatorebrooklyn.com/MenuBrunch.html

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – ?

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: A lovely backyard to linger in while we waited and waited and waited for service (just sayin’), a prix fixe that includes mimosa or bellini and coffee or tea with your app & an entree that costs… um…. I forgot, but it was definitely under $20.  I think.

Long Story Long:

Good lord, I forgot how much work full time jobs are.  Lately, all I have been doing is working.  I mean, I’m not complaining… I like being busy.  Actually, BFFF and I were just talking the other day about the fact that we make horrible unemployed people and how utterly depressing that is.  Oh well.  In any case, a couple weekends ago I went to Il Passatore on a glorious and warm Saturday afternoon.  I am not proud, but I have to confess that I have not been to brunch since, even having skipped it one Saturday for something work related.  As I said, I’m not proud.   So, as I sat down in a rare free moment to write this, I tried to summon the vision of that beautiful day.  You would think that the memory of it would be particularly strong.  Sweet.  Wistful and nostalgic… Yeah, no.  I got nothing. Baba… Kosher for Passover CLOSED

3 04 2010

Location: 502 Lorimer St @ Powers, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.bababrooklyn.com/brunch

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 10am – 5pm (but they do serve a limited breakfast menu during the week too)

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: No bloodies, only <<shudder>> blood orange mimosas.  The coffee was FANTASTIC and the food was pretty good too.  Definitely points for originality… check the menu. Cheap too.

Long Story Long:

I am a Jew.  And Passover is my least favorite holiday – there, I said it.  It’s fucking annoying especially if you are a half-assed Jew (such as myself).  What I mean is, I am rational enough to find some of these traditions antiquated and not practical, yet traditional enough to feel guilty for thinking the traditions are antiquated and not practical, especially because, at the end of the day, the traditions I grew up with are very much a part of who I am as an adult today: a traditional, guilt-ridden, half-assed J.E.W.  Seriously though, some of my happiest, funniest childhood memories involve these traditions, so I guess I shouldn’t be such a brat about them… But, per usual, I digress…

Last Saturday, (Passover Day 5), I was meeting up with Chux for brunch – he happens to be one of a small handful of my brunchkillaz who is also Jewish.  I talked to him about how I was kind of trying to avoid bread-like substances and we discussed how blatantly disingenuous a move like that feels even though, after all these years, I still feel compelled to do so.  We kinda wandered a bit with vague intentions of hitting up Elote (it was super-gorgeous out, perfect for a back garden) when we passed Baba, a place, according to Chux, known for meats. El Almacen… Over-Medium

14 11 2009

Steak & Eggs - El Almacen

Location: 557 Driggs Ave @ N. 7th St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/el-almacen/menu

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 3pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Entrees under $12.  Drinks are good, but only wine & beer based or mimosas – and cost around $8ish, $9ish

Long Story Long:

It was yet another very rough Friday night that preceded this trip to El Almacen, and the fucking terrible weather was not helping at all.  As I stumbled my way through the streets with the world’s cheapest, most asinine $5 umbrella, strongly reconsidering my choice to leave the house, I get a text from BFFF (who, incidentally does not believe in umbrellas, and I was beginning to understand why) that she was already at the restaurant and sitting outside in the back garden.  Interesting…. but as I am never one to turn down one last brunch outdoors before winter, I decided not to ask questions and just trust her.  Plus, I learned my lesson from the Fada incident…. Miranda… Bloody Sneaky

8 08 2009

miranda

Location: 80 Berry St @ N. 9th St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.mirandarestaurant.com/miranda-brunch.htm

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 3pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Very classy, delicious & different food.  Most egg entrees under $10. Wine & beer only, but the Michelada I had was a delightfully deceptive stand-in for my usual bloody.

Long Story Long:

All I wanted this particular morning was a bloody and a burger.  A friend of mine suggested this place which offers neither.  I eventually caved when I was accused of being narrow-minded.  Well, sure I am, but no bloodys? Humph.  So we walk in and I see a drink on someone’s table (a la pic #2 below) which looks suspiciously familiar…. My heart skipped a beat.  Is it possible that my non-conformity was being rewarded?  I feverishly checked the menu and saw on the drink menu three words that were just… well, cruel.  “VIRGIN Bloody Mary.”  Um, no.  Never.  Nothanx. Fornino… ***NO LONGER SERVES BRUNCH

16 05 2009

fornino

Location: 187 Bedford Ave @ N. 7th St, Williamsburg

Menu: brunch menu is not online

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm- 4pm

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: The brunch pizzas are HUGE and tasty. You should be into sunny-side up eggs, though. Mimosa is included, and beer & wine is also available if that’s your thing.

Long Story Long:

Being a bloodys-and-omelette type of gal, it took a little convincing to get me here. It’s not that the menu didn’t sound delicious- very interesting flavor combos- but I guess, unless I’m feeling a burger, I generally tend towards breakfasty foods for brunch. That being said, these brunch pizzas are pretty breakfasty – eggs & prosciutto, eggs & spinach, eggs and sausage topped with truffle oil…. yum. Also, as the photos can attest, they are HUGE.

Beer Table… Interesting

21 03 2009

beertable

Location: 427 7th Ave, Park Slope

Menu: http://beertable.com/

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: The menu’s always different, food was tasty but not huge. They only serve beer – great beer, and a LOT of info about said beer provided by the knowledgeable staff.

Long Story Long:

A non-walking-distance brunch journey took me and my crew to Beer Table.

At the time, I was not a meat eater.  Thus, the main plate of the day which included bacon, was not something I was interested in.   Read the rest of this entry »

Simple Cafe… Virgin Mary

17 01 2009

Location: 346 Bedford Ave @ S. 3rd St, Williamsburg

*also - South 4th Bar – 90 S. 4th St (http://www.south4thbar.com)

Menu: http://www.simplecafenyc.com

Brunch Hrs: Sat & Sun, 10am  – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: No bloodys!!! (but great make-your owns at South 4th bar around the corner). Awesome coffee & home fries. Not huge portions.

Long Story Long:

The first brunch I have ever had where I did not order a cocktail was this one Sunday at Simple Cafe.  Portions were medium and everything was good enough.  Maybe, a little home-made feeling.  In other words,  the eggs were kinda overcooked, but the potatoes more than made up for it with what I swore was a kind of pesto-y taste, but my compadre insists there was some rosemary in there too.  I don’t know about that but they were pretty frickin tasty– all 5 of them.  Ok, ok –  I was a bit cranky due to fact that their brunch cocktail offering was bloody-free.   Read the rest of this entry »

4 01 2009

n6

UPDATE: It appears this lovely establishment has closed.  What a pity. I will leave this post up in loving memory…

Location: 263 N. 6th St @ Havemeyer, Williamsburg

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 3pm

My Rating:level1(because it’s closed)

Long Story Short: Your reasonably priced meal comes with a Mimosa or Bellini and coffee.  Brunch entrees all under $10. word.

Long Story Long:

My previous experiences with n.6 have always been romantic dinners… with my BFFF.  She likes candles on the table, what can i say?  So when she thought that we should check out the brunch, I was totally down.   Read the rest of this entry »

Egg

2 01 2009

Location: 135 N 5th St, between Bedford & Berry, Williamsburg

Menu: http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/egg/menus/main.html

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 8am – 3pm (they also serve this menu for breakfast during the week)

My Rating: UNRATED – Haven’t been there yet

Long Story Short: Ugh, I have tried to go here a million times, but I always seem to arrive too late.  It’s very popular, so they close off the wait list at some point, so if you want to go, go early.  In my opinion, any place that doesn’t serve bloodys can’t be worth the fuss.  But that’s just me.

Ella

2 01 2009

Location: 177 Bedford Ave, between N. 7th & N. 8th St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.ellacafe.com/Ella_Cafe/Menu.html

Brunch Hours: Saturday, 9am – 3pm & Sunday, 10am – 3pm

My Rating: UNRATED – Check back soon

Long Story Short: Large menu of organic omelettes, skillets, sandwiches, etc…  I’ve eaten other meals here before and the food is tasty & fresh.  Now serving mimosas! With organic juice, I’d imagine… and really good coffee.
