Rabbit Hole… Every Journey Has a Beginning

27 12 2010

Location: 352 Bedford Ave @ S. 4th, Williamsburg

Menu: http://rabbitholerestaurant.com/index2.html

Brunch Hours: All week long (!), 8am – 5pm (!!)

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Good lord this place is good… and they serve brunch every day.  Bloody was awesome and if that’s not your thing they have many signature cocktails to choose from.  And you can get them at 8am on a Monday if you wanted.  Yay America!

Long Story Long:

All this annoying snow has got me thinking…. (aka i’m stuck in my house, dvr is empty and there is NOTHING on tv at all…)

Didn’t I used to have a blog?

YES! a BRUNCH blog. This one, as a matter of fact. Duh.

I started this post a few months ago and never finished it which is a shame because this egg sandwich quest has carried on, even in my long absence from writing about it.  In the new year, I am going to do my best to kill brunch more regularly (now that I only have one job I can’t complain about having no time anymore), but until then, here’s the tale of how I began an epic journey (aaand I had to hold myself back from writing “egg-pic”… oops, guess not.)… Read the rest of this entry »

Barberry… Brunchkill 2.0

15 05 2010

Location: 152 Metropolitan Avenue @ Berry, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.barberryny.com/

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 3:30pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Interesting Mediterranean menu, including a couple of non-traditional egg dishes, entrees between $9- $15.  Bloodys were not bad, and outdoor seating was a little weird, but not terrible.

Long Story Long:

Basically, I fucking love my birthday.  I honestly don’t foresee a time when I won’t want to do it up: milestone year or not, I like to stretch out the celebration as long as possible.  So after a dignified & intimate dinner on the day of (Thursday, May 13, 2010 – #31 for the record), I had planned a roof-top cocktail gathering for the following Saturday night, thanks to the generous hosting offer from Monster (nee The Filmmaker).  I prepped for my fete the way I usually do – brunch followed by last minute frantic shopping (at least there was no danger of a snowstorm at this time of year).  Since they were co-hosting, I met Monster and P-Nasty at Barberry to plan.  I arrived first (odd with this couple as they tend to be super-punctual) and I got us a sweet table outside which was admittedly a little canted, but whatever – it was a gorgeous day, so who cares anyway?  I ordered a bloody and before the waitress could even bring it, they arrived, suspicious smiles on their faces…. They apologized for their late arrival and we exchanged some stilted small talk.  It was… awkward for some reason, so I had to ask what was up.

“We have something for you.”

Aurora… XXXXL

16 04 2010

Location: 70 Grand St @ Wythe, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.auroraristorante.com/menus.html#

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4pm, cash only

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Nice menu, interesting cocktail menu ($7 for a regular bloody, $12 for XL), pretty garden out back.  There is a prix fixe for $15 which includes a bloody, mimosa or bellini and coffee (XL bloody not included).  Service was slow, especially at the bar – get it together, Aurora.

Long Story Long:

So, it had been several weeks since I had had brunch with BFFF for one reason or another (aka she started to run qualifying races for the NY Marathon on the weekends.  I am very proud of her for this, but at the same time it’s really starting to fuck with my weekend plans).  We were really excited to try this place as we had stumbled upon it on a walk one blustery winter afternoon, saw the amazing garden, and made a mental note to hold off on coming back until the weather was better.

We waited and waited for the right weekend, taunted by visions of just exactly how “XL” an “XL” bloody mary could be.  Finally, last Saturday, we were both free, the sun was shining and it was warm enough to eat outdoors – it was happening. Read the rest of this entry »

Roebling Tea Room… Worth the Wait

27 03 2010

Location: 143 Roebling @ Metropolitan Ave (it’s actually on Metropolitan though. don’t ask…), Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/roebling-tea-room/menu (but they do change it up on occasion)

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 10am – 4:30pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Yes, it will take a loooong time to get seated and then a long time to get served. But, dammnit those baked eggs and cheese grits are worth it.  Bloody is great too – they use olive juice, I think.  A dirty bloody… nice.

Long Story Long:

I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the wait.  Not only for the table but also for the waiter/tress… and the drinks… and the food… ugh.  Yes, I know.  It sucks.  But there’s a reason it takes time to get a table.   Read the rest of this entry »

Diner… Oh, The Dramz

15 12 2009

Burger With Cheddar, Pickled Onion & Fries - Diner

Location: 85 Broadway @ Berry St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.dinernyc.com/menus.html#

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: The menu always changes, but the website has some examples.  There is an amazing burger that’s always available if the specials don’t suit you.  I have had dinner here and it’s incredible, but pricey.  Standard brunch cocktails with a few clever standouts, 2 sizes of bloodys, small for $6/ large for $9.  Guess which I went for.

Long Story Long:

I have somewhat recently started a new job after spending the last couple months working at a place that really didn’t keep me all that busy, so it’s been quite a shock to suddenly be working 12 hour days while attempting to maintain the same social life I had when my hours were essentially 11am – 3pm.  Yeah.  That doesn’t really work so much at my age.  So basically, I was totally sleep deprived this weekend which I have since discovered does something powerfully uncool to me… it makes me insane and it makes me melodramatic.  An awesome combination when 90% of my social circle is comprised of a bunch of gossipy gays and us ladies who love them.  In any case, I was not able to have brunch on Saturday so when Sunday rolled around I was determined to go, but in my head, I was surrounded by people conspiring to thwart me.  My crew was hell bent on attending a series of holiday parties, inconveniently scheduled during brunch times, not to mention the fact that they were all over the city and the weather was completely terrible and I’ve really been having issues with my bangs these days, especially when it rains, and all I really wanted was a bloody I mean I don’t ask for much these days and is it really all that– woah.  Sorry.  Deep breaths…. Rye… Class Act

22 11 2009

Cocktails! - Rye

Location: 247 S. 1st St, between Roebling & Havemeyer St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.ryerestaurant.com/menu.html

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4:30pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: The food here is amazing, breakfasty dishes are reasonably priced, entrees can go a bit high.  The bloody was interesting – made with sriracha sauce, which I generally don’t care for… but I still totally had 2, in spite of them being $10 a pop.  Also, they were tiny, so that could be part of it too.

Long Story Long:

Having to recover from the let-down that was Saturday’s brunch was not going to be easy, so we chose wisely… yes. Rye. Perfect.  I have been here for dinner before and the food is excellent, not to mention the amazing and creative list of signature cocktails.  I had a Red Rooster.  Well actually, I had two.  It is essentially a bloody mary with sriracha sauce as the “heat” element.  As you may know, sriracha has a very distinct flavor which I’m not the biggest fan of, but I was glad I gave it a shot – it was pretty tasty in that context.  Plus, they make them potent, which I definitely appreciated considering how pricey and tiny they were.

In any case, after the four of us – myself, The Filmmaker, my friend the Inquisitive Orderer and her boyfriend – requested a round of $10 cocktails, we decided to get a side of biscuits for the table as an appetizer.  My inquisitive friend (the only person I have ever dined with who frequently tests the wait-staff’s knowledge of their establishment’s product and I LOVE her for it) inquired how many came in the order.  ”Three,” the put-upon waitress responded, glancing around the table.  ”You get three per order.”  My friend looked at her quizzically, and also glanced around the table.  ”Three?” she responded.  ”Yes, there are three per order.”  Ooooooo…..k.   Read the rest of this entry »

Baci & Abbracci… Tricks and Treats

31 10 2009

Bloody Mary & Strawberry Mojito - Baci & Abracci

Location: 204 Grand St @ Bedford Ave, Williamsburg

Menu: http://baciny.com/frame_brunch.php

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Majority of entrees under $10, lots of fun sounding omelettes and frittatas, also, this sounds ridiculous: Focaccia con nutella – Two layers of pizza bread with nutella. Yum!  All that and $5 bloodys.

Long Story Long:

Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday though I haven’t actually worn a costume in many, many years.  In my mind, there is much too much pressure to be clever – but I admire those who take the time and effort to go through all that.  Of course, I always get shit about this; i.e., “How can you love Halloween but not dress up, blah blah blah” -  so this year I let myself be persuaded to consider participating in a group costume of some sort if we could have brunch first to discuss.  I met my BFFF and our long-lost brunch buddy, The Filmmaker.  Oddly enough, he was the one pushing for the costume when, generally, I can count on him to be as much of a non-joiner as I am.  This will not do, I thought, and started scheming.  Step one, I chose a place with Italian food – Baci & Abbracci.  We got there around 2pm and there was literally no one else there – awesome to have the place to ourselves, but I generally shy away from empty restaurants.  It just seems like a bad sign.  My BFFF however, was starving (as usual) and flat-out refused to go elsewhere when food was so nearby.  Plus, she reasoned, we probably wouldn’t have to wait that long for service.  Good point…. Flying Cow… Intense ** CLOSED

26 09 2009

Burger N' Fries - Flying Cow
Location: 2 Hope St @ Roebling, Williamsburg

Menu: http://the-flyingcow.com/

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 5pm, amex & cash only

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: Overall not bad, but I never thought ordering a burger at a steakhouse would make me wish I had tried an egg dish.  Good bloody, but I spent a LOT of cash here.

Long Story Long:

Ok, that description sounds negative I know, so in their defense, I should mention that I was in a pretty crappy mood on this particular morning after being ditched by my BFF (for the third time that week!) because she needed a nap after her Saturday morning class.  Lame.  So we ended up in a kind of passive aggressive fight; i.e., I was silently angry for a couple hours until I decided to let it go and move on with my life.

Anyways, luckily we had included a third party in our plans because I really hate dining alone.  Doubly lucky – it was Mr. Awesome Table Manners – a newish friend of mine who, as it turns out, I still didn’t know that much about so we had lots to chat about.  He’s great to eat with not only because he’s polite, but also because he likes to (as I do) impulsively order menu items based on cool sounding names.  Thus our choice of appetizer: INTENSE warm aged goat cheese.  Interesting….

Fiore… More Cheese with Your Whine?

12 09 2009

fiore

Location: 284 Grand St, between Roebling & Havemeyer, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.fiorebk.com/menus.htm

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4pm, cash only

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: $7 bloodys, mimosas, or bellinis, HUGE really delicious plates, great service even for pains in the ass such as we were that day

Long Story Long:

This was not a good morning.  For some reason my friends and I thought it would be a really great idea to stay out until 5:30am.  I have no problem admitting that I just might be too old to still be doing that at this point.  In any case, even walking to brunch was a chore – I was attacked by pigeons, assaulted by a random street fair which turned out to be, of all things, a fucking health fair wherein a young child walked up to me to ask if I wanted to know how healthy I was.  No thanks, Junior… Read the rest of this entry »

Caracas… You wan-arepas?

30 08 2009

caracas

Location: 291 Grand St, between Havermeyer & Roebling, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.caracasarepabar.com/brooklyn.php

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 3pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Huge platters or individual, ready-made arepas- up to your appetite.  I really liked the food a lot.  Bloodys made with fresh cherry tomatoes…. interesting.  Gorgeous backyard.

Long Story Long:

On this particular Sunday, I was late meeting my friend for brunch – I overslept (thus her half finished cocktail pictured below).  Sadly, she had somewhere to be, so we didnt have much time to waste.  I sat down and quickly scanned the menu – cocktails first, natch.  I was super curious about the cocktails as, at the time, Caracas had just gotten their liquor license.  I was thrilled, but at the same time daunted, to see not one, but TWO bloody mary options.  Of course, my issue was not having 2 bloodys at 1pm on a Sunday – it was strictly the time-crunch. Yikes.  With barely even reading the distinction, I went with the traditional bloody and food-wise, ordered whatever it was that my friend had ordered (in my frenzy to read about cocktails, I wasn’t really listening to her).

With our order in, I was finally free to peruse the menu….FUCK. Read the rest of this entry »
