Cafe Colette… There’s A First Time For Everything

10 02 2012

Location: 79 Berry St, between N. 9th & 10th, Williamsburg G

Menu: http://cafe-colette.com/images/brunchmenu.jpg

Brunch Hours: 10am – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short:  Incredible signature cocktails, passable bloody (the pickle spear is a nice touch).  The food is consistently awesome – and the portions are exactly right.  Expensive, but worth every penny.

Long Story Long:  I have to confess that if I had written this post after the first time I went to this place, I don’t know that I would have given it that 4th stalk.  But after many MANY MANY returns to this adorable (if not a teeny bit too hipster in decor and clientele for my taste, but it’s subtle enough to not be annoying) establishment, I have absolutely softened.

Anyway, in the months and months and months that I have been coming here and not writing about it, one visit in particular springs to mind.  It was the first time in known memory that I ordered a cocktail other than a bloody… yeah. I know.  It’s huge.  Here’s the sad part:

Anella… So Nice, We Tried it Twice

5 02 2011

Location: 222 Franklin Ave between Green & Huron, Greenpoint

Menu: http://www.anellabrooklyn.com/menu/anella-brunch.pdf

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 3pm, Cash only

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: A little on the pricey side (because you definitely want to hit up some of those apps & sides, trust me), but worth every single penny.  So fresh and delicious, and I should mention that all the breads and pastries are baked on the premises by the (incredibly hot) chef.  Bloody was passable but nothing special though I sincerely couldn’t give a shit about that.  Try this place, it’s amazing – worth the price and the hike into Greenpoint.

Long Story Long:

In my long, winding, journeys around the hood with BFFF in search of new places to dine (aka, she’s goes running, thinks she may have seen a restaurant, we go seek it out and realize it was a plant store or pharmacy IF it even exists…) we often come up empty and return again and again to the same places.  This story is similar, with one major exception - this time, instead of being a product of runner’s high-induced hallucinations, she actually stumbled upon a truly hidden gem up in the far reaches of Greenpoint, namely Anella.  Monster, P-Nasty, BFFF and I hit this place up for dinner one night and we were truly blown away.  There was this one roasted broccoli side dish we had that was… well, more on that later.   Read the rest of this entry »

Rabbit Hole… Every Journey Has a Beginning

27 12 2010

Location: 352 Bedford Ave @ S. 4th, Williamsburg

Menu: http://rabbitholerestaurant.com/index2.html

Brunch Hours: All week long (!), 8am – 5pm (!!)

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Good lord this place is good… and they serve brunch every day.  Bloody was awesome and if that’s not your thing they have many signature cocktails to choose from.  And you can get them at 8am on a Monday if you wanted.  Yay America!

Long Story Long:

All this annoying snow has got me thinking…. (aka i’m stuck in my house, dvr is empty and there is NOTHING on tv at all…)

Didn’t I used to have a blog?

YES! a BRUNCH blog. This one, as a matter of fact. Duh.

I started this post a few months ago and never finished it which is a shame because this egg sandwich quest has carried on, even in my long absence from writing about it.  In the new year, I am going to do my best to kill brunch more regularly (now that I only have one job I can’t complain about having no time anymore), but until then, here’s the tale of how I began an epic journey (aaand I had to hold myself back from writing “egg-pic”… oops, guess not.)… Read the rest of this entry »

Good… Bold Move

30 05 2010

Location: 89 Greenwich Ave, between Bank & W. 12th St, NYC

Menu: http://www.goodrestaurantnyc.com/BrunchPdf.pdf

Brunch Hours: Sat, 11am – 4pm, Sun 10am-4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Holy crap – the BEST egg sandwich I have had in a very very long time… And the bloody wasn’t too shabby either.  A little pricey (bloody is $9.50), not in the hood, but well worth the trip. wow.

Long Story Long:

Who but the notorious Girlfriend Jones could get my ass to the city for brunch on the weekend?  I consented only when he promised it would be amazing.  And he delivered.  Oh man, did he deliver.

That being said,  it is a very bold move to name your restaurant with such a positive name.  Fortunately, in this case, they are right.  Actually, they should have called it FUCKING FANTASTIC. Read the rest of this entry »

Mother’s… Barfly

6 02 2010

Cheese Grits - Mother's

Location: 347 Graham Ave, between Conselyea & Metropolitan, Williamsburg

Menu: See photo for the brunch menu

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 5pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: $11 gets you an entree, coffee & and sake bloody mary, blood orange mimosa or a pint.  Food is fine and it comes out fast, but nothing mind-blowing.  At the end of the day, it is mostly a bar, so the service is friendly, but it’s not truly a restaurant – if you want super-attentive, you might want to go elsewhere.

Long Story Short:

As a general rule, I fucking love bars.  I really, really do.  It’s easy to say “sure you do, you love drinking” and you would be right, but it’s more than that.  I guess what I really mean is that I love bar culture.  There’s something comforting about being a regular – it makes people-watching more fun and creates a sense of entitlement – my stool, my table – which is fun for me for some reason.  Commiserating with the bartender about that annoying group of 20 years olds that keep buying Bud Lights & PBRs feels so… I don’t know, exclusive.  I can’t explain it well – I just really dig it.  That being said, there are some places where having my first meal of the day while sunlight is streaming in through the front windows makes me sort of uneasy.  Mother’s – a bar-staurant, yes, but still mostly a bar (there is no table service for anything other than brunch) – has this effect on me.  That being said, I was curious to try out their brunch because the menu sounded kind of interesting, and also because I am trying to embrace the recessionista lifestyle.  An $11 prix fixe, drink included, is an excellent way to do this.

I arrived with The Filmmaker & P-Nasty, who began thinking of ways to kill the requisite 15 minute wait for BFFF while I struggled to get over my squeamishness.  As our eyes adjusted to the light and we ordered some cocktails, P-Nasty pointed out the the light from the window would be really great for a photo shoot.   Read the rest of this entry »

Diner… Oh, The Dramz

15 12 2009

Burger With Cheddar, Pickled Onion & Fries - Diner

Location: 85 Broadway @ Berry St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.dinernyc.com/menus.html#

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: The menu always changes, but the website has some examples.  There is an amazing burger that’s always available if the specials don’t suit you.  I have had dinner here and it’s incredible, but pricey.  Standard brunch cocktails with a few clever standouts, 2 sizes of bloodys, small for $6/ large for $9.  Guess which I went for.

Long Story Long:

I have somewhat recently started a new job after spending the last couple months working at a place that really didn’t keep me all that busy, so it’s been quite a shock to suddenly be working 12 hour days while attempting to maintain the same social life I had when my hours were essentially 11am – 3pm.  Yeah.  That doesn’t really work so much at my age.  So basically, I was totally sleep deprived this weekend which I have since discovered does something powerfully uncool to me… it makes me insane and it makes me melodramatic.  An awesome combination when 90% of my social circle is comprised of a bunch of gossipy gays and us ladies who love them.  In any case, I was not able to have brunch on Saturday so when Sunday rolled around I was determined to go, but in my head, I was surrounded by people conspiring to thwart me.  My crew was hell bent on attending a series of holiday parties, inconveniently scheduled during brunch times, not to mention the fact that they were all over the city and the weather was completely terrible and I’ve really been having issues with my bangs these days, especially when it rains, and all I really wanted was a bloody I mean I don’t ask for much these days and is it really all that– woah.  Sorry.  Deep breaths…. Harefield Road… Good on Paper

28 11 2009

Bloody Mary & Mimosa - Harefield Road

Location: 769 Metropolitan Ave, between Graham & Humboldt, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/harefield-road-pub/menu

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 12pm – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: $12 for a vast selection of entrees, plus coffee or tea & bloody or mimosa.  Though I am a huge fan of this bar, I wasn’t really blown away by the brunch.  I hear the huevos rancheros are a good choice, plus it is a really good deal.

Long Story Long:

I have been adamantly avoiding brunch at this place.  Not for nothing, but this is my very own neighborhood bar.  It is a block and a half away from my apartment, I know a significant number of the bartenders by name as well as a few of the other regulars, it’s the first and only bar I have ever been to alone, and it is one of very few places I have let myself act like a complete ass.  That’s all well and good at the end of a crazy Friday or Saturday night, but in the sober light of day… needless to say, I was a bit hesitant to show my face there.  It was, however, a ridiculously broke Saturday morning coupled with a seemingly insatiable bloody mary craving that finally drove me to it.  Also, I was reassured by BFFF who has spent some time in the bar-staurant industry: she convinced me that there was very little chance that anyone who works until last call would be back for a brunch shift.  As long as we made it in and out before happy hour, we were good to go…. even though their happy hour does offer $3 wells… but I digress. Rye… Class Act

22 11 2009

Cocktails! - Rye

Location: 247 S. 1st St, between Roebling & Havemeyer St, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.ryerestaurant.com/menu.html

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4:30pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: The food here is amazing, breakfasty dishes are reasonably priced, entrees can go a bit high.  The bloody was interesting – made with sriracha sauce, which I generally don’t care for… but I still totally had 2, in spite of them being $10 a pop.  Also, they were tiny, so that could be part of it too.

Long Story Long:

Having to recover from the let-down that was Saturday’s brunch was not going to be easy, so we chose wisely… yes. Rye. Perfect.  I have been here for dinner before and the food is excellent, not to mention the amazing and creative list of signature cocktails.  I had a Red Rooster.  Well actually, I had two.  It is essentially a bloody mary with sriracha sauce as the “heat” element.  As you may know, sriracha has a very distinct flavor which I’m not the biggest fan of, but I was glad I gave it a shot – it was pretty tasty in that context.  Plus, they make them potent, which I definitely appreciated considering how pricey and tiny they were.

In any case, after the four of us – myself, The Filmmaker, my friend the Inquisitive Orderer and her boyfriend – requested a round of $10 cocktails, we decided to get a side of biscuits for the table as an appetizer.  My inquisitive friend (the only person I have ever dined with who frequently tests the wait-staff’s knowledge of their establishment’s product and I LOVE her for it) inquired how many came in the order.  ”Three,” the put-upon waitress responded, glancing around the table.  ”You get three per order.”  My friend looked at her quizzically, and also glanced around the table.  ”Three?” she responded.  ”Yes, there are three per order.”  Ooooooo…..k.   Read the rest of this entry »

Five Leaves… You Can’t Go Home Again

21 11 2009

Roasted Chicken Sandwich - Five Leaves

Location: 18 Bedford Ave @ Lorimer St, Greenpoint

Menu: http://www.fiveleavesny.com/main/#/breakfast

Brunch Hours: 7 days, starting at 8am, cash only

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: Technically not a dedicated brunch, wait was much shorter than expected.  Not a whole lot of egg options, but ok sandwiches, decent bloody.  Kinda loud inside and service was slow – though, in their defense, they were quite busy, but i still had to wait waaaaay to long for a cocktail while my friends happily sipped their lattes.  For me, it was over-hyped and not really worth the price…

Long Story Long:

There’s this really awesome French/Moroccan place in Soho, Cafe Gitane, which holds a very special place in my heart.  My friends and I have been going there for many, many years, and being someone who hates change, I used to always order the same thing – roasted chicken sandwich on a baguette with roasted tomato, chipotle mayo & giant slabs of parmesan. UH-mazing.  I have not had this delicious sandwich in quite some time – it’s been a while since we’ve gone there, plus, there was my brief dalliance with vegetarianism….  In any case, what does this have to do with Five Leaves? Well… Read the rest of this entry »

Brunch Hours: All day, everyday, M-F open at 11:30, Sat & Sun, open at 9:30

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Holy shit – this place is like my dream come true. Amazing homemade bloodys, an artisanal bacon bar… A little pricey, but I would GLADLY shell out another $9 for that bloody. Good lord…

Long Story Long:

Ok yes – this is not technically a road trip, I know…. but as it falls outside of the confines of the burg, and I went there on a weekday, let’s call it one.

So I was having kind of a shitty week when my BFFF suggested that we have lunch to celebrate the end of it.  Since it was practically the weekend and I sort of had the afternoon off, we decided to finally try this place.  I met her there and she had a huge smile on her face having just heard the rundown of signature cocktails.  She had already ordered me a bloody, explaining that the mix was homemade from fresh tomatoes and reportedly incredible.  This was no overstatement.  I honestly may be ruined for life – it was fantastic, and immediately lifted my spirits.  The second one lifted them even further….
