Calyer… I Don’t Do Sharing

18 02 2012

Location: 92 Calyer St, at Franklin, Greenpoint

Menu: http://www.calyerbrooklyn.com/brunch-2/

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11a-3p

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Since this place is a sister restaurant to Anella, I would have to say run, don’t walk.  The food is creative and amazing.  Can get a little pricey if you let it, because you’ll want to literally try everything, but if you can control yourself… more power to you.  Oh and the bloody was amazing and garnished with cornichons. yum.

Long Story Long:

I was super-psyched about this place for the one week in between an AMAZING dinner here with Monster and P-nasty et al and our scheduled brunch here last saturday.  Sadly, M & P had to bail, but luckily I had my long walk into Greenpoint (and some gaga) to help me deal with my lame passive-aggressiveness and change my attitude.  By the time I arrived at my destination, I was in a much more pleasant state of mind to meet my brunch companion – let’s call him Muse (mostly because the direct result of his urging/discipline/commitment to a monthly brunch date in 2012 is what served as my inspiration to start this blog up again…).

In any case, as a result of my dinner, I knew this to be a small-plates-sharing-type place.  And I am NOT good at sharing, especially during brunch.  Ask my siblings. Read the rest of this entry »

Manhattan Inn… Roadblocks, Change and Other Obstacles

4 02 2012

Location: 632 Manhattan Avenue @ Nassau Ave, Greenpoint

Menu: http://www.themanhattaninn.com/?page_id=16

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 3pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: Food is fine, bloody was pretty great… BUT be warned.  There is a real person playing piano in the back room.  A plus for those of you into that sort of thing (they have very talented performers) but if you are like me and have this weird issue about talking while someone is performing… just remember, you and your awkward brunch companions were warned.

Long Story Long:

On this chilly(ish) winter day, I am reminded a roof party at P-Nasty’s.  I believe this particular gathering (there were many) occurred at the very height of 2 summers ago, and I believe it was not tied specifically to any occasion –  it was… just because.  It was fun.  Maybe a bit too much fun.  Regardless, we all somehow managed to make it to brunch the next day in Greenpoint.  It was a bunch of us – including our previous night’s host who, out of all of us, was a bit worse for wear.  I was in the midst of my egg sandwich journey at the time but hadn’t bothered to consult the menu to see if they had one.  Which reminds me…

Fuck.   Read the rest of this entry »

Anella… So Nice, We Tried it Twice

5 02 2011

Location: 222 Franklin Ave between Green & Huron, Greenpoint

Menu: http://www.anellabrooklyn.com/menu/anella-brunch.pdf

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 3pm, Cash only

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: A little on the pricey side (because you definitely want to hit up some of those apps & sides, trust me), but worth every single penny.  So fresh and delicious, and I should mention that all the breads and pastries are baked on the premises by the (incredibly hot) chef.  Bloody was passable but nothing special though I sincerely couldn’t give a shit about that.  Try this place, it’s amazing – worth the price and the hike into Greenpoint.

Long Story Long:

In my long, winding, journeys around the hood with BFFF in search of new places to dine (aka, she’s goes running, thinks she may have seen a restaurant, we go seek it out and realize it was a plant store or pharmacy IF it even exists…) we often come up empty and return again and again to the same places.  This story is similar, with one major exception - this time, instead of being a product of runner’s high-induced hallucinations, she actually stumbled upon a truly hidden gem up in the far reaches of Greenpoint, namely Anella.  Monster, P-Nasty, BFFF and I hit this place up for dinner one night and we were truly blown away.  There was this one roasted broccoli side dish we had that was… well, more on that later.   Read the rest of this entry »

The Habitat… Full Service

29 05 2010

Location: 988 Manhattan Ave @ Kent, Greenpoint

Menu: http://www.thehabitatbrooklyn.com/menus

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalksinglestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: $15 prix fix includes entree, bloody or mimosa or sangria and coffee tea.  They have a make-your-own bloody bar if you happen to be into that… I am not.  Thankfully, they have their own mix on hand.

Long Story Long:

I am very vocal about my aversion to a dining experience where I have to do any work.  In other words, I don’t like fajitas (too much assembly required), can’t stand meat on the bone (especially chicken… annoying), and that fucking fondue nonsense where they bring a pot of scalding oil and a tray of raw meats to your table? Gross.  And dangerous.  I’m more than sure I would either burn myself or give myself food poisoning.

In any case, having barely recovered from the Virgin Mary incident, I put myself in the capable hands of BFFF, knowing how committed she is to me not giving up booze.  She took this opportunity to drag me into Greenpoint, mostly because she had this weird random craving for mac and cheese and as much as we all are in love with the Dumont mac & cheese, I wanted to try somewhere new.  My research led me to this place (they have a $5 mac and cheese mondays special).  It was a gorgeous day, so I figured, what the hell.

I underestimated just exactly how long it would take me to get there, so for once, she was waiting for me – and was very excited to inform me that they had a make-your-own-bloody bar.  I didn’t immediately recoil – I thoroughly enjoy the myobb at South 4th Bar.  I mean, you are given some decent mix to begin with and you can add as much fucking horseradish, pickles, olives, hot sauce, etc. as you want.  What’s so bad about that?

Umm yeah… not this place. Read the rest of this entry »

Five Leaves… You Can’t Go Home Again

21 11 2009

Roasted Chicken Sandwich - Five Leaves

Location: 18 Bedford Ave @ Lorimer St, Greenpoint

Menu: http://www.fiveleavesny.com/main/#/breakfast

Brunch Hours: 7 days, starting at 8am, cash only

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: Technically not a dedicated brunch, wait was much shorter than expected.  Not a whole lot of egg options, but ok sandwiches, decent bloody.  Kinda loud inside and service was slow – though, in their defense, they were quite busy, but i still had to wait waaaaay to long for a cocktail while my friends happily sipped their lattes.  For me, it was over-hyped and not really worth the price…

Long Story Long:

There’s this really awesome French/Moroccan place in Soho, Cafe Gitane, which holds a very special place in my heart.  My friends and I have been going there for many, many years, and being someone who hates change, I used to always order the same thing – roasted chicken sandwich on a baguette with roasted tomato, chipotle mayo & giant slabs of parmesan. UH-mazing.  I have not had this delicious sandwich in quite some time – it’s been a while since we’ve gone there, plus, there was my brief dalliance with vegetarianism….  In any case, what does this have to do with Five Leaves? Well… Read the rest of this entry »

Lokal… Hyper-Local Once Again

17 10 2009

Bellini & Bloody - Lokal

Location: 905 Lorimer St @ Bedford Ave, Williamsburg

Menu: http://lokalbistro.com/brunchmenu.htm

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 11am – 4pm

My Rating: singlestalksinglestalk

Long Story Short: $11.50 prix fixe includes coffee or tea & OJ.  Points for $4 bloodys, bellinis & mimosas.  Pretty standard, reliable – nothing earth-shattering, but overall a pleasant experience.

Long Story Long:

After a couple weekends of traveling, it was nice to be back in the hood, and whatever – I only realized the adorably appropriate name of this weekend’s location just now, so shut it.  In any case, this weekend also marked the return of another favorite part of the brunch experience… a Lost Saturday with my BFFF!  Yeah, yeah – we were pretty “lost” in the Hamptons together the weekend before, but somehow an LS just isn’t the same if we aren’t within stumbling distance of our respective abodes… Read the rest of this entry »

Enid’s… I Don’t Get It

4 07 2009

Location: 560 Manhattan Ave @ Driggs, Williamsburg

Menu: http://www.enids.net/brunch.html

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 10am – 3:30pm

My Rating: singlestalk

Long Story Short: Pretty standard, reasonably priced. Very veggie friendly.  However, nothing about this place justifies to me the generally-consistent, super-long wait during prime time.

Long Story Long:

I usually avoid this place because there’s ALWAYS a crowd out front waiting to be seated and I have been known to be a little bit impatient from time to time.  So, one uncharacteristically early morning, we decided to give it a shot.  That worked – we didn’t wait long which was nice.

And… yeah.  I really just don’t get this place.  I guess I used to have fun here when it was a bar, but it was always super-crowded even then and it’s never been clear to me why. Read the rest of this entry »

Location: 180 Franklin St @ Java St, Greenpoint

Menu: http://brooklynlabel.com/blog/brunch/

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 9am – 4pm

My Rating: UNRATED – Haven’t been there yet

Long Story Short: Eggs dishes are $10 and up, but sound delicious (and from what I hear you get a lot of bang for your buck).  No booze, lots of veggie/vegan options.

Menu: http://www.cafecitobogota.com/Home/menu-1/brunch-exclusivo-1

Brunch Hours: Sat & Sun, 10am – 4pm

My Rating: UNRATED – check back soon

Long Story Short: They offer a $12.50 all you can drink brunch – one of only two in the whole hood at least as far as i’ve found so far – allegedly the price includes one entree from a pretty vast array, including a selections of so-called “Columbian Hangover Helpers”… curious…. They also offer breakfast arepas as well as some standards like eggs benedict & french toast for those so inclined.

Long Story Short: Polish brunch! Eggs with Kielbasa and blintzes! Not to mention the fact that it’s ridiculously cheap.  They have a full bar as well.
