Long Story Short: $15 for an ample entree plus a cocktail & amazing coffee or tea. The food is excellent, the bloodys were great as was their signature cocktail – a passion fruit capiroska. You have to try this place, trust me.
Long Story Long:
Fucking holidays… seriously. I didn’t realize so many places closed down for so damn long during this time of year. Annoying…. but please don’t think I went bloodyless for nearly three weeks. Heeeell no. I took the opportunity to revisit some of my favorites like Lokal & give others a second chance (thanks but no thanks Flying Cow. I stand by my original opinion).
In any case, as it was a new year, I was anxious to try a new place. BFFF and I chose Beco. Actually, we had been trying to go there for about 2 weeks but they were closed for the holiday – argh. We finally managed to make it there for dinner one night and… amazing. As frustrated as I had been trying to go there in the first place, this was definitely the place we would be having brunch at the following weekend.
On Saturday, I arrived on time and BFFF was running late – I love you to death, my friend, but it cracks me up how you consistently arrive 15 minutes after the agreed upon time. Generally, I factor this in when heading out the door, but I guess I was excited to get there and just forgot. I arrived to find that the place was mostly packed, and the over-taxed waitress wasn’t really seeing me standing there. Since it’s not a huge place, I felt constantly in somebody’s way or hovering over a table, so I opted to wait outside in spite of how cold it was and how fucking awesome it smells in there. Once she arrived, we again were overlooked by the waitress, so we saw an open table for two and as there was no one else waiting, we figured we could just seat ourselves. Within seconds the waitess came over, effusively apologizing and handing us menus. “No big deal,” we assured her. Well… because it totally wasn’t.
I love the menu here because there are lots of traditional Brazilian options (see photo 3 – BFFF’s Feijoada, aka the national Brazilian dish: black beans and smoked meat stew w/rice, the best collard greens I personally have ever tasted, some kind of citrus salsa and toasted yucca flour – perfect for a cold day) as well as some regular breakfast entrees – eggs benedict, eggs florentine, omelettes, french toast – you get the idea. I opted for the delicious eggs florentine, though I kind of wished I had ordered a side of those collards- they are ridiculous. I would have gotten the Feijoada instead, but per usual, BFFF would not allow us to order the same thing, EVEN after making me wait in the cold for her, but whatever. Oh, and I should reiterate the above – entrees come with coffee & a cocktail for $15. I, of course, had a bloody which was big, spicy and delicious, plus it was served with asparagus in it as garnish. Love it. BFFF had their signature cocktail – a passion fruit capiroska which was pretty tasty too if you like that sort of thing (a bit too sweet for my taste). And their cocktails during brunch are only $5, so we of course ordered another round. My second bloody was half the size for some reason, but twice as strong – score – and when the bill came, we realized they were on the house! Double score! Hangover before: impatient Hangover after: triumphant
